SUCCESS STORY

When her ex-husband stopped paying child support, Alma and her children were forced to move in with her brother to save money. Later, Alma was incorrectly told by county officials that she was ineligible for food stamps because of her living situation, and she was left with little means to feed her kids. How could Alma feed and take care of her family?

How Legal Aid Helped
As part of our Safety Net Services, Legal Aid appointed an attorney to help Alma resolve the situation.

  • Legal Aid reviewed the eligibility guidelines for food stamps and learned that Alma should receive benefits, even if she and her children were living with Alma's brother.
  • The attorney requested a hearing and served as Alma's advocate during the proceedings.
  • Alma was not only approved for food stamps but received over $1,100 in retroactive food stamps.

Today Alma and her children are able to complete their grocery shopping and put food on the table thanks to the benefits Legal Aid secured for them.
