OUR SERVICES

The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County serves as legal advocates and representatives for disadvantaged people. We work closely with community organizations and county agencies to find solutions to our clients’ legal problems.

Many of our staff are bilingual in English and Spanish, and we use Language Line Services to translate and communicate in a variety of languages. Click on each link to read more about our services:

Caregivers

  • Guardianship Pro Bono Project is directed at grandparents, relatives, and others who are caring for someone else’s children. Legal Aid helps in the filing of guardianship petitions.
  • Caregivers Legal Assistance Network provides assistance to family members caring for seniors aged 60 or over. We answer questions about conservatorships, Medi-care, and Advanced Health Care Directives.

Children

  • Peninsula Family Advocacy Program (FAP) provides legal services to pregnant women and low-income families from San Mateo County and Santa Clara County whose children are receiving medical care at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital or Ravenswood Family Health Center.

Children & Adults with Disabilities

  • Kids in Crisis Project (KIC) assists children with disabilities and their families with questions about SSI, the Golden Gate Regional Center, California Children's Services and special education.
  • Clients' Rights Advocate (CRA) helps adults with disabilities in San Mateo County and focuses on issues of eligibility, due process rights, and access to public services and benefits.

Seniors

  • Senior Advocates provides legal services for San Mateo County residents age 60 and over to resolve matters involving estate planning, guardianships, landlord/tenant problems, and government benefits including Social Security and Medi-Cal.

Survivors of Domestic Violence

  • New Beginnings Program provides legal services to low-income women and teens who are survivors of domestic violence.
  • Domestic Violence Collaborative helps low-income domestic violence survivors get essential protective orders and provides limited scope pro bono representation at their restraining order hearing.

Teen Parent

  • Teen Parent Project (TPP) answers questions about child custody or visitation and protection from abuse. We offer representation to pregnant or parenting teens so they can leave abusers and establish stable lives.

Health

  • Health Consumer Center of San Mateo County (HCC) helps individuals and families navigate complicated local, state, and federal health programs such as Medi-Cal and Medicare, so that the clients can receive appropriate services and avoid medical debt.

Income Maintenance

  • Safety Net Services provides assistance to low-income, San Mateo County residents who have issues concerning food stamps, CalWORKS, CAPI and Social Security/SSI and General Assistance.

Housing

  • HomeSavers Project helps tenants who are having problems with their landlords. Tenant clinics are held three times a week. Drop-ins are welcome but appointments are given preference. Please call Legal Aid to schedule an appointment.
